Curating in Gallery

Due to the mass body of the work exhibited, especially many of them requiring reassembling after shipping, we spent roughly 4 days setting up. The first few days I mainly reassembled the large and other small installations. Then the day before the opening day the gallery’s curating crew came with technicians to put up monitors, curtains, secure works surfaces etc. Professional Gallery has its own curation team and technicians, which is also a completely new idea for me, as a student who has only been a part of student shows that have been doing everything ourselves. It definitely fastened and made the process a lot easier, especially when they have in-depth knowledge and techniques about setting up artwork in all forms.

The image above is one of the technicians helping us stabilise the installation in the desired position with fish wire, watching and partaking in the process of setting up allows me to learn more about ways to utilise different materials and tools to secure artwork in an exhibition context. I’ve even become more familiar with different types of screws.

Partaking in a professional curating process allows me to understand the significance of small details and changes in the colour of the wall, lighting, angles and placement matters. The 3rd image is the lighting angle after being adjusted by the gallery owner, which it added spatial depth to the room, providing a completely different visual experience. Curation is definitely another area that I want to be paying more attention to when I have a show on in the future, through experimenting and more considerate about how to utilise the space.
