In Studio

The artist I’m working with is in preparation to go to Beijing for an exhibition commissioned by the gallery, therefore I went to the studio to help her pack and disassemble her installation pieces so it’s easier to transport.

During this session, I was constantly asking questions and having conversations about being an individual artist especially navigating the creative industry in London with a Chinese background. This is another reason I want to work for my artist, where I can gain knowledges not only about technical things, but also about the career itself. I also got more insight into balancing financial gain or commercial success and making art, connections and collaborating with other artists, making merch, how to start as an individual CG artist etc. She is very straightforward about all the information I’m curious about, which is very helpful.

While packing the installation, I was surprised that the gallery she was working with didn’t provide enough funding for transportation of the physical installations, and she had to bring it to China with her own luggage. This made me reflect on how the Chinese art industry in general doesn’t have enough funding and support for young artists in our generation, which made me again realise how much passion and effort my artist had with her own art.

Furthermore, I also asked different working methods and tools she used on her installations. Including material used, ways of finding 3D printing factories, colouring/ painting for the models and even putting models together. The interchangeable aspect of 3D modelling allows the works can be shown both digitally on screen, but also as and physical subject in the material world.
